Howdy, y'all, from deep in the heart of Texas.
A year from now, I will start my AT hike, south to north.
Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of time; therefore, it'll have to
be section-hiking.
Fortunately, I work for a university and can take time off during spring
break while the students are away.
My plan is to section-hike for 10 days at a time for as many spring
breaks it takes to do the entire 2,000-plus miles.
I was smitten by the Trail in 1975, when, while on leave from Fort Bragg,
North Carolina, I hiked 50 miles of the NC-TN border. I met several
thru-hikers, envious of their long trek. I remember the "caged" shelters,
the tree-less balds, and stories of bear-sightings by trekkers. I still
remember the Vasque boots I wore, the SVEA 123 stove I used, the Gerry
down sleeping bag I slept in, and the Universal external-frame pack I
carried, all bought from the original Whole Earth Provision Co. in
Austin, TX.
I hope to benefit from y'all's posts.
For now, my trail name is Countdown.
- 365 days and counting -
