Trolls go fishing, or "trolling" for responses.

The perfect troll is a post that is almost on topic, but enough off
topic to elicit dozens, or many dozens of replies and replies to replies
that send the members of a group off on a tangent.

They are usually posted by someone who is not even a lurker on the list,
just someone who is trying to pull as many chains as possible and move on.

Or it's a small hairy creature that lives under AT bridges. 

Take your pick.
