[at-l] Mt. Mitchell

Here are the "winter" directions for getting to Mt. Mitchell without
getting turned around at 3 different road closings.
From Asheville:
Take I-40 East to the town of Old Fort.
Take 70 East from I-40.
Take a left onto 80 West after about 10 miles or so.
Go past the Blue Ridge Parkway about 2 miles.
Take a left onto Forest Road 472.
Follow this a couple miles to Black Mountain Campground.
The Mt. Mitchell Trail starts across the river from parking lot. Just walk
over the bridge and the trail starts over on the left. It's 5.6 miles to
the top... a little bit further if you take the Higgins Bald Trail that
loops off and back to the MMT at about 1.5 miles. I recommend this option.

The telephone number for the ranger is 704-675-4611 in case you want to
call about road conditions or anything. If you are looking for the topo,
it is the South Toe River Trail Map and is part of Pisgah NF. I can't
remember who asked in the first place, but enjoy!

Walk with light,
