Re: [at-l] Pack this...

=>From: "wooley worm" <wooleybugger@hotmail.com>

I get 526 oz = 32-14, plus water, plus food. Say 45 pounds with 5 days food.
Many hike with more, but your hike might be more enjoyable with less. Of
course, YMMV.

I think you could cut 8 pounds from this.

=>    104  Kelty Super Tioga

This is a BIG pack. 6-8. A comfortable external can be found at 4-2, less
with modifications.

=>      6  Kelty Pack cover

Trash bag weighs much less, may work better.

=> 49 Survivor 20* Sleeping Bag by Slumberjack

3-1 seems heavy by say 8 oz.

=> 79 Eurika Timberlite tent w/poles, pegs, sealer and stuff sack

4-15 is heavy for 1 person. Seal before you go. A SD Clip Flashlight could
save you maybe 12 ounces.

=>     33  Therm-A-Rest standard/ long

This is a personal decision. An el-cheapo foam pad weighs 9 oz. The point
here is that any of these items are defensible, but all together, they add
up. A standard/long Therm-A-Rest is a luxury, OK, you should have a luxury
or two, but ONLY one or two. After that, hiking becomes a drag. Camp will
be great, but hiking will be a drag. 8 hours hiking, 8 sleeping, 8 in camp.
It's a balance.

=>     34  Peak-1 442 Duel Fuel w/fuel
=> 22 Fuel Bottle MSR 22 oz. (full)

Can you mix MSR gear with Peak1? Anyway the 11 oz bottle will do. 3-8 for
stove/fuel is heavy - a MSR is 14 oz.

=> 9 Aluminum pots, Lifter and spoon

Use the dampened edge of a hanky for a lifter.

=> 17 First Need water purifer

There are filters out there for 8 oz. Or Iodine.

=> 3 Nalgene Cantene, water bag
=>      4  Nalgene 32oz. bottle

Nalgene is heavy. Look into two 2.5 L platypuses (platypi?) for 2 1/2 ozs.

=>      1  Water Bottle, generic 1 ltr.

Good.

=>      6  Insulated Cup, Alladin 20oz.

Heavy by 4 oz. You won't need insulated. Or this could be one of your two
luxuries ;)

=>      2  Trowel, plastic

Use your boot heel.

=>      8  T.P.

2 ozs will do for when you can't find leaves.

=>      5  Mini-Mag flashlight w/headband

AAA minimag weighs 2 oz. Solitare weighs 1.

=>      1  Candle

Luxury. See comment above.

=>      1  Whistle

=>      1  Compass, Siova basic

You won't need it. I carry one ;)

=>      9  Through Hikers Handbook
=>      4  At Data Book

Tear these up and only carry the sections you are hiking - mail the rest to
yourself later.

=>      5  Notebook, Pen
=>      5  "Parachute Cord" 3/20 ft. pieces
=>      6  AM/FM Radio/earphones

Luxury.

=>      3  Suess Army Knife

Overkill, IMHO.

=> 6 First Aid, Mole Skin, Bandaids, Ibuprofin, Mycitricin,
=>      6  Tooth brush,Tooth Paste,

6 oz seems a lot.

=>      7  Long John Pant, Polartec 100
=>     10  Long Sleeve Shirt, Polartec 100
=>     16  Jacket,zippered, Polartec 200

=>     14  Long Pants,zip leg convertables, nylon

Not sure how useful these pants will be.

=>      9  Shorts, nylon
=>      8  Socks,Smart Wool, Liners, 2pr. each
=>      1  Poly glove liners
=>      9  T Shirt
=>     11  Rain Coat  (Bellweather)
=>     12  Rian Pants (Bellweather)

Not sure you will like/need the rainpants.
Another set of Long Johns might be useful at night when the 1st set are wet.
Make sure the hat is warm.

Have fun, and good luck!
