DON'T DO IT! DON'T DO IT! DON'T DO IT!!!!
Way back in '79, I did the Nimblewill Gap manuever WildBill mentions
below, and spent the next 14 years (till '93) regretting it. Start
from Amicalola Falls and do the full hike to Springer. By the time you
get there, you will be "ready" to start the AT. To do one of the other
manuevers is to hit that plack/view/sign with too many vestiges of
civilization.

For hikers wishing to start at Springer Mountain and hike north, most will
start at Amicalola Falls State Park on Ga. Highway 52W. The access trail to
Springer Mountain from the State Park is approximately 8 miles. Forest Service
Rd. 28-2 intersects the access trail at Nimblewill Gap about 2 miles from the
Springer Mountain summit.
It is possible to drive within 0.9 miles of the Springer Mountain Summit on U.
S. Forest Service Road 42 which intersects the AT at Springer Mountain parking
area.
