Initially the AT wasn't a 'route', it was a concept. As the idea caught on
and hiking enthusiasts worked to turn the concept into a route it took the
path of least resistance (land ownership wise). The original concept was a
'wilderness' experience not a roadwalk/town experience but those were
necessary in some places due to geography and property rights issues. The
route has changed over the years in large part to get closer to the
concept. Experiencing the people in towns along the route was not part of
the concept or the whole thing would have been a road walk from the start.
