I think that about sums it up.  And I don't think that's a bad thing.  Whether
or not I agree with WF, I have no doubt that his motivation is his love of the
AT and thruhiking.  Some talk of the money he makes off of his book.  But I
have self-published some stuff, too, and believe me, no matter how many you
sell, you aren't going to do much more than pay for the publishing.  I'm sure
he would like to make big bucks off of it, but it is intended for too narrow
an audience to sell enough to make much money. 
Wingfoot is about as high profile as hikers get  (most of the country still
wouldn't know his name from Adam's), and he does focus a lot of GOOD attention
on the AT. I wish that I were lucky enough to have my true passion also be my
way of providing for myself.
I don't want this to come off as the WF cheering section here, though.  After
all, I am also one who left his list because of the way he does things.  Only
I did it about a year and a half ago after another of his "cleansings" of the
troublemakers. (you all know who you are ;) )
