check some of the local sewing machine specialty stores, very often people
looking to upgrade to a newer machine, will sell their old machines on
consignment.  You can probably get a decent deal on a decent machine that way.
Another good avenue is the local want advertiser magazine.  People who retire
from businesses or just don't have any use for stuff sell there at dirt-cheap
prices, you just have to know what you are looking at.  For gear sewing you
may be interested in looking for industrial machines rather than
commercial...machines that can drive a needle through packcloth, seam-tape,
zipper tape, etc.  Good luck.
