It is easier to show than to explain, but I will do my best. :)

Instead of hooking up the fanny pack around your waist, hook it around
the the shoulder straps, below the sternum strap (and wherever is most
comftorable for you).
The buckle of the fanny pack will face your stomach. The advantage to
this method I found was that it is easy to take on and off as needed.  As
I said, been using this "belly pack" technique for a while now, and find
it works well.
