I'd try that at home first.  Never know when you might develop
a sensitivity to something and then you are stuck with it all over
your pack or straps.  I only mention this because last week I
had a really odd reaction to something that made my back
itch like crazy almost from the moment I started hiking.  I was
wearing clothes that I had worn before but it is possible that they
had been washed in something different than normal.  Anyway....
it was so bad that I had to drop pack and pull off my shirt to do
a bear rub on a tree about once and hour.....even after I switched
the suspect shirt.  The irritation continued for two days while hiking
and for two hours post shower. Not fun...
