Re: [at-l] Winter Trip Tips long

Quick comments on leg coverings for winter mountaineering...

When you are going to be in a position where you will be wearing
crampons and/or snowshoes, get windpants (and fleece pants) with full
side zips. Pants with full side zips usually have a flap on the inside
to keep out the cold air (and ofen on the outside, too to keep the ice
out of the zipper).

They are also nearly crucial when you have to put your pants on or take
them off while you are on sloping ice or deep snow. With the full side
zips, you do not need to take your crampons or snowshoes off and can
leave both of your feet firmly planted while putting your pants on.

They are more expensive but it sure beats taking your snowshoes (or
crampons) off and postholing up to your crotch into a spruce trap (or
sliding down an icy rock face) when you lose your balance trying to put
a leg through the windpants.
