Just don't sleep too close to any creosote bushes, or acacia trees. My first
night under the desert starts - sans tent, 15 years ago - ended up in my
being
stung by a bark scorpion. >>

Camped with the family near Canyon Lake (not too far from Phoenix). A little
bit before sunset, I happened to look behind me, away from the lake and saw
the desert floor appear to be alive with a shifty, crawly movement - heading
for us.

As far as we could see to the left and to the right, tarantulas had come out
and were heading for the lake, perhaps to get water (?). It looked like a
huge carpet moving our way. We abandoned our campsite to the critters,
prefering to spend the night in the cars.

Enjoy your trip.

BTW - we were out there many other times before and since and never
encountered anything even remotely like that one time. And no, peyote never
entered the picture either.
