Losing toenails is frequently due to toe jam. This is NOT the stinky, grotey
stuff between your toes. It *is* the result of your toes jamming into the
front of your boot. Best recommendation is to keep your toenails short and
make sure your boots fit properly.

I did both and still lost two toenails to my great surprise about 3 months
afterwards.
