RE: [at-l] KC's pack contents

KC,

In my non thru-hiker and not particularly humble opinion, wide brimmed hats
have one big advantage over baseball caps: sun protection. Baseball caps
shield your face a bit, but do nothing for the back of the neck or ears. I
seem to recall that sunburn was a problem for a number of early season (i.e.
before the trees leaf out) thru-hikers.

I alternate between a wide brimmed hat, sort of like a Tilly Hat, and a
Sequel "River Rhat" hat. The "River Rhat" is like a long brimmed baseball
hat with a removable supplex cape. Sequel also sells a "Desert Rhat" hat
that is similar, but has a cotton cape that wraps around and provides even
more sun protection. I suppose one could rig a cape out of a bandanna as
well. Other features of the Sequel hats include open mesh on the sides and
a reflective panel in the top that helps keep your head cool in bright sun.

The biggest advantage, for me, of the "River Rhat" hat over the wide brimmed
hat is that I can wear it under a hood. Since I wear glasses I HAVE to have
a hat to keep the rain off.

On the other hand, the wide brimmed hat looks a lot better.

Subject: [at-l] KC's pack contents

Several people asked me for my pack contents on this last trip. Here they
are. I got rid of that head bashing fishing scale and bought a postal scale.
Reweighed everything. First, what I wore Tilly Hat 4oz (will change back to
my baseball hat though)
