Re: [at-l] breaking camp

I always eat a cold breakfast while backpacking to limit the time spent
getting going, and one of the options I've come to like is chocolate
flavored protein powder. This is the stuff that people use to gain weight
while weight-lifting. It goes by a variety of names (e.g. "Weight Gain
1000"). I prepackage about 6-8 oz. of it in ziplocks, one for each morning
I want that for breakfast. Before I go to bed, I dump the stuff into a 1
liter Nalgene and fill with water. In the morning, I just drink it while
packing up. 7 dry ounces in water contains ~700 calories (nearly 4 Pop
Tart's worth), with lots of protein, complex carbos, vitamins, and essential
amino acids. No garbage calories at all. And totally vegan for those of
you who don't dig flesh. Want more calories? Add more powder. Need
caffeine? Add instant coffee (but prepare to pee a lot). It gets old after
a while, but it sure does get me going fast in the morning. Plus, pounding
a liter of liquid before starting out hydrates me well for the beginning of
the day. Downside? Kinda pricey.
