[at-l] esbitt stove report

Just back from a week on the AT in NC. I used a sterno stove and an
esbitt stove in liue of my favorite peak 1. One of the listers had
opined that I was obviously a " rank amateur"- so be it!
Here's my opinions.
I hated the sterno, even when closed and off it gave off a disgusting
odor. Actually made me heave ho once. Its slowness was irrelevant- I
wasn't in a hurry.
The esbitt was great. I used 3 hexamine tablets to start, and then fed
dry twigs in underneath to get a roaring fire going. Some smell, pots
sooty, who cares. I loved the size and weight. Hikers around me were
intrigued. Saw a svea, and a trangia, as well as thre usual msr. I will
be fashioning a windscrean from a ccokie tin though- Jim
