Being confident and prepared doesn't necessarily have much to do with it.
At 11 yrs, I badly smashed my ankle and did have to get myself 2 mi. home.
My ankle was broken in three places and a chunk of bone was floating.
It hurt like hell and did damage but I walked out. I did not feel stronger
for having done so.
This year I broke the long bone on the outside of my foot, Gratefully, I
had only yards to walk not miles. The idea that there is wood around so
just make a splint is good in theory, but until you have done it I wouldn't
think of it lightly.
And let's remember that a hiker, and lister's life was saved just this year because
his companion had a cellphone and called for help. I hike solo, but not for long
periods and am constantly aware and prepared to wait where i am for a couple
days if I break anything else. If cellphones worked where I hike, I'd carry one.
A super lightweight one of course <g> k.
