Bryson's book is a good read, humorous, etc., but it does not in
any way capture the essence of thru-hiking, in my opinion, nor does
it give a fair reading of the AT scene. His stay was too short, his
prejudices too thick, to be a fair look. It is a valid look, but he
just scratches the surface. As entertainment, it is top notch, as
a representation of the many facets of thru-hiking, it falls way
short. One cannot just waltz in and figure it all out, no matter
how good a writer. If I had to pick a new title, it might be
something like "Ernest Hikes the AT", which has its commercial
appeal, but is hardly definitive. Plus, I don't like the grizzly
bear they put on the cover (but it does represent what is wrong
with the entire book; it is not seen through understanding eyes)!
