Friday, August 28
Done with my journal, I headed for the subway. As I passed Murphy's Rest,
I looked for hikers. There were Bug Bite and Granny Low. I stopped in and
chatted awhile.
My foot long sub filled me to satisfaction, so I headed back to my tent,
which I had left behind Panarchy. My tent was just as I had left it.
Saturday, August 29
This morning I went to the West Side Buffet for breakfast. I had waffles
and Maple syrup, fruit and orange juice, and cold cereal.
I stopped back at Keiwitt to check my email again. Then I went back to
Panarchy. I packed my bag, and on the way to the trail I met Bug Bite and
Granny Low. They told me that Plush and Simple were in town.
I picked up a pint of Ben and Jerry's Peanut Butter Cup and wrapped it in
my sleeping bag for later. It was 12:00
The weather today was cloudy and rainy. I walked through several fields
and got soaked.
I met Captain, Jerry Hoffman, and Red Rock slacking south. They said they
had met about fourteen or fifteen north bounders today.
The trail was relatively easy and I made it to Trapper John Shelter by
6:30. There was only one south bounder there with his dog.
I pulled on some dry clothes, filtered some water, and then pulled out my
ice cream. It had turned into a milkshake, but it did not lose its flavor.
Being hungry, it was gone in no time. Then I cooked a Ramen. And now I'm
still hungry. I think I'll eat a Nutrageous.
Sunday, August 30
The south bounder was up and out by 7. He wanted to make it to Hanover
today. I hung around and took it easy. It was a beautiful morning.
When I crossed the road at the bottom of Smarts Mountain, a car pulled
into the parking lot. I went over and said hi. It was a young lady out
for a day hike. We hiked together to the top of Smarts. On the way up we
got a good view of the mountain. On top was a fire tower. From the tower
we could see a long way! Mt. Moosilauke loomed majestically in the north.
Yes! I will climb that mountain tomorrow!
I met Goob, Doc, and Llama at the tower. They told me that Mt. Roamer had
just left. I ate my lunch before starting down the mountain.
My next stop was on top of Mt. Cube. Here you could get a great view of
the south. After my break, I took a few minutes to run over to the North
Peak of Cube. From there I got a great view of Moosilauke. I did not stay
long because it was almost 5 p.m. and I still had a few miles to the Atwell
Hilton.
When I got to the road at the bottom of Cube, I met Yoyo and Mt. Roamer.
They were taking a break. I caught up on the news, and then we hiked on.
Rooster, Lightweight, Goob, Llama, Doc, Caretaker, and the old Moose were
all at the Hilton when we got there. They informed us that Dizzy B (the
trail Angel) had gone to the store to get some hot dogs.
The Hilton is an abandoned house that works excellent for a hiker shelter.
Dizzy B supplies the place with water and other goodies. We built a fire
and waited for Dizzy's return. When she came, she had hot dogs, chili and
marshmallows. She also had drinks for everyone. Stone Man was the only
south bounder in the group. He had problems with blisters, so this was his
fourth or fifth night there.
We all sat around the fire and roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. Yahoola
stopped in to see whom all was around. We had a great time telling stories
until 12:00. Then we turned in for the night.
