For optimal results, always select a filter with a pore size of no greater
than 0.4 microns if you expect it to protect you from bacteria such as
cholera, typhoid, and E. coli. Several filters combine a larger pore-size
filter with a resin which releases iodine "on demand". They are generally
effective for bacteria and viruses. A filter without the iodine resin, even
with a pore size less than 0.4 microns, will not
eliminate viruses - if you use one of these on water which is likely
contaminated with human waste, it would be wise to pre-treat the water with
iodine.
