[at-l] re: PUR pioneer

nicole:

i have a pioneer and a hiker. i use both regularly, and like them both.
if i were doing a *solo* AT thruhike, i would use the pioneer. for more
than one, i'd use the hiker because of its much greater capacity. i used
the pioneer on a 50 mile hike from dennis cove rd to damascus prior to
trail days 97, and it worked flawlessly. i've used it often in the sierra
since. it is SO LIGHT (8oz dry) and you can store a couple extra filter
disks in the pump handle. plus you can screw a nalgene onto it. suggested
filter life seems about right to me. i've only replaced one disk.

other than capacity, there is only one significant difference between the
hiker and the pur and that is the carbon core in the hiker's cartridge.
this is good for removing obscure tastes and some chemicals, but most water
on the AT does not present a problem in this area. the filter 'paper' in
the hiker and pioneer is the same stuff. pumping time is very similar,
maybe a little faster in the pioneer.

it seems to me the pioneer is the ideal solo AT thruhike filter...
