Felix, definitely drop at Manchester Center. It screams. Good hostel,
interesting town, there's an outlet store with cheap Thorlos. The hitch
into town is easy, but make sure to stop at the P.O. on your way in,
it's about a mile walk from the hostel. All hiker services available.

N. Woodstock worked for me - the hitch in was a little slow, getting out
of town was a breeze. I got in & out on the same day, but there's a B&B
there some friends stayed at which wasn't too steep. Again, a full
service town. You might also consider Glencliff, a little further south,
easy walk to the P.O., but few other services nearby.

Whether or not you drop in Glencliff, stay with the Weatherman while
you're in the area, he only takes four at a time (doesn't have any more
room in his car), but treated us to a real sit-down dinner with
tablecloth, silver & wine. Check out the information on him in the
Handbook or Companion & follow the instructions carefully.
