Perhaps things are different in the PRNJ and elsewhere, but
the stereotypical drunken hunter is almost never encountered
in Maine. The bad hunters here are just pig stupid and scatter-
brained. I've heard stories (told to me first hand with boastful
pride) that'd scare many of you off the trail during gun season.

I believe that the biggest danger for hikers is not being shot
after walking into some hunter's (cold) kill zone, but rather
running into a psyched-up hunter who is in hot pursuit of a deer
he's just shot at. If you hear a nearby shot, it's a good idea
to stop for a few minutes, listen, and make some noise. If you
hear more than two shots in rapid succession, consider also going
to cover.
