Hi Julia,
There are cheap policies that you can get that are basically catastrophic
coverage only. They cost a few hundred dollars (like 2 or 3 hundred) for
6 months. Time-Life has one, and I'm sure you can find others. Check
the coverage, though--some might not cover you for "risky" sports, and
I'm not sure if hiking comes under that heading or not. Hope this helps!
I did not have insurance during my hike and spent years without it, but
at times have had these policies (but never had to use them). Now I'm
self-employed, and pay a bundle every month for regular insurance. (Hey,
if anyone knows of cheap insurance for the self-employed (writer), please
let me know privately. Thanks.)
