Hi All
I'm passing along part of an email I recieved that originated from ATC's Don
MacDougall. Lately we, at-ler's, have been talking a lot about the kindness of
others maybe we should talk a little about how we can do things to minimize
reports like the following
>I received a call the other day from Tillie Wood, from Woodshole hostel
>south of Pearisburg about two hikers who caused some trouble at the
>Rendevous Hotel in Pearisburg this past weekend. Two thru-hikers Happy
>Feet (not the Foote's from NBATC, although it's disheartening to see some
>one using their trailname and behaving badly) and Doc, apparently beat up a
>fellow thru-hiker who had asked them to quiet down. Doc, Happy Feet and
>apparently some other fellow thru-hikers were drinking and making a lot of
>noise while staying at the Rendevous. Another hiker staying at the Hotel
>with his female hiking partner asked them to be quiet so that others could
>sleep (I didn't get the hikers trailname), Doc and Happy Feet took
>exception to being asked to be quiet and got into a fight with the hiker
>who asked them to be quiet. Form what folks have told me the hiker who
>asked the two to be quiet threw the first punch, but he did not fare very
>well and took a pretty good beating. The owner of the Hotel called the
>police and Doc and Happy Feet spent the night in jail and were released the
>next morning. The hiker who was beat up and his partner have gotten off
>the Trail. Doc and Happy Feet had also caused problems with drinking and
>noise at the Hostel in Pearisburg as well and were asked to leave there by
>the Hostel keeper. Tillie told me that Doc and Happy Feet had made
>threatening remarks to other thru-hikers who had complained about their
>noise and partying, causing those folks to be concerned about their safety
>after leaving Pearisburg. I gave two thru-hikers who wanted to skip ahead
>a number of miles to get away from Doc and Happy Feet and the group they
>are traveling with, because they were worried about what these guys might
>do. The two hikers said that these folks have been partying it up since
>trail days and that alcohol and perhaps other substances has something to
>do with their current behavior. The two hikers also corrobarated what
>Tillie Wood had told me about Doc and Happy Feet.
>
>I am passing this information up the line so that folks will be aware that
>we have at least two thru-hikers acting irresponsibly, and so that if
>another incident occurs involving these guys, the background information is
>out there.
