Ray Jardine's book the Pacific Crest Trail Hikers Handbook is a must read for any
hiker.  Ray discusses many of the unmentionable subjects that are worth knowing about
such as umbrellas, running shoes, not using a water filter, high mileage, stealth
camping, tarps, bathing with your clothes on, home made gear, ultralight 12 pound pack
weight, etc.  His stuff may not be for everybody, but most everybody on this list will
enjoy or learn something and become aware of some more controversy.  Book available
