Hopeful,
On my thru-hike last year, i didn't really have to replace many clothes other than
the ones you mentioned. I lost a mid-weight thermal top in PA, and a Cool-Max shirt
NH. The Cool-Max shirt had lost almost all of it's wicking ability by around New
York, but i didn't feel like buying a new one. It stunk to high heaven as well, so
you might want to take that into consideration. For shorts i carried two pairs of
Umbro soccer shorts, one of which i cut into a skirt in southern PA. They lasted the
whole trip. I had no problems with wear and tear on my winter and rain gear. As for
socks, i probably went through 8-10 pair. I wasn't really counting, but i think that
is a pretty accurate guess. I didn't use one brand specifically the whole way, and i
don't pay much attention to brand names, so i couldn't tell you what kind of sock is
"sturdier" than others. I went through 2 pairs of Asolo boots... i believe the 420
and 530 (same basic boot). I should have gotten a third pair, but by the time i got
to Maine i decided "to heck with it", and just made do.

As for replacing the clothes... my Mom sent me a new thermal top in one of my
maildrops, the Cool-Max shirt was replaced with an extra shirt one of my hiking
partners had, the socks were replaced both in stores along the way and in mail
drops, and i already had both pairs of boots and switched them in mail drops. Feel
free to email me if you have any more questions! HTH! HAND!
