Don't waste your time in trying to determine whether the
Appalachian Trail is safe; determine instead whether *you*
are safe. Safety is dictated by your behavior, knowledge
and preparation. It is also, both realistically and juris-
prudentially, *your* responsibility alone.

Understanding this is the first step on the road to self-
empowerment and genuine security.

This is not to denigrate the importance of correct and honest
crime statistics. People need to know what they're up against
in order to make prudent preparations and rational decisions.
My fear, however, is that many people will simply use your
information as a drunkard uses a lamppost; for support rather
than illumination.
