A list server is set up for the purpose of *discussion*. If the discussion
gets out of hand and deteriorates into personal attacks the "owner" of the
list has a right and even an obligation to tell the offending parties to
shape up. If that fails it is not inappropriate to summarily remove them
from the list. This is proper because such attacks are distructive to the
*discussion* for which the list was established.

The "owner" should however, be prepared to tolerate the civil expression of
points of view which are in conflict with his or her own beliefs/feelings
on the topic(s) being discussed. If limits are to be placed on such
expression the list ceases to be a discussion and becomes little more than
a podium for the viewpoint of the list owner and a chat club for those who
share his/her view. The "owners" of the best lists I have participated in
rarely took sides in any discussion.

I don't know the specifics of any of the disputes alluded to by some
members of this list or whether there was actually any departure from the
above in the disagreements. The above is presented only as my opinion of
how a list *should* work.
