As a hundred or so people will tell you, it's prohibited by law, and you
can be fined if the Forest Service rangers, or National Park rangers catch
you doing it. You can bet someone will report you if you do it anyway--many
AT backpackers are vigorously anti-bike, at least where the AT is concerned.

Why not try a trail like the Pacific Northwest Trail (Continental Divide to
Olympic Penn.) that isn't federally regulated and allows bikes (at least on
some portions), and isn't as heavily traveled as the AT. It's about 1000
miles, which should be plenty long.
