Eric you are so right.  I understand that if set up and left in the
direct sun a nylon tent's life will be about 3 to 4 weeks.  If protected
it will last years.
I used to take my kids camping for the whole summer and my tent was set
up for 8 weeks at a time.  My tent has lasted  years and still going
strong.  I put a tarp over it which helped us keep dry and cool (well
cooler).
