Thanks for clearing that up, Redhead.  I couldn't remember the number of
permits.  Then I guess the story I heard must have been that as many as
1,500 people were hiking up to Mt. Whitney on Labor Day weekend and that
large number is what triggered the enactment of a permit system for the
hike.
