Zach:
That listing in trailway news was those hikers who reported their completion 
of the trail this year. Some people don't report immediately.  the small 
numbers for the years before 97 are therefore deceiving.  Also the ATC does
not make a distinction between section hikers and thru hikers in that list
so some of the names could have taken 20 years of 2 week vacations to complete 
the trail.
