Re: [at-l] Hiking without a pocketbook??

I agree totally with the belly bag theory.
It's similar to the smaller pack theory.
If you carry a large pack, you will 'find'
things to fill it up.
I stopped carrying a "junk-it-book" years ago,
after someone tried to snatch my mom's purse.
Much easier to defend yourself and your wallet
if both your hands are free in the real world.

I switched to a b-bag for both real-world and
trail use. I also carry much of what many women
carry in their purse, in my car.

On the trail, I carry a lot in my b-bag because I go solo
and cross large creeks and could easily have to let
go of my pack, so my b-bag has survival equipment
to keep me till I get back out. Also I explore packless
and if I were seriously injured, like a badly broken foot
<<G>>, I wouldn't necessarily need to get back to
camp to await rescuse.

In my trail B-Bag I keep:

three food bars plus gorp du'jour
polar pure
2 qt ziplocks to put the water in
a mylar blanket
disposable plastic poncho
firestater
bic
50 ft lt but tuff cord
squeeze light

Also I carry stuff I use frequently like
the dog's bug dope SSS
tooth brush
an empty eye drop bottle of tooth polish which
doesn;t foam as much as paste
TP and wet ones
paper and pencil
ID, bank card, phone card, money for goodies and 2quarters.
and some other stuff which is none of your business <<VVBG>>
To the pack I lash a 5X8 piece of tyvek
my heavy duty space blanket

I have a holster on the side for dog gorp.

Sounds like alot, but it's carefully packed.

One word of caution. There are alot of
different styles of B-bag/fanny packs.
since I'm slightly short, I had trouble finding
one that I didn't hit with my leg on steep uphills.
I ended up with one designed to hold a
large caliber pistol which I found in a gun
store. It's a tad heavier than some b-bags,
but will last for ever. And is built to be
sleeker than most B-bags. Rather than
being a box on a belt,it's contoured to wrap around.
Works much better with my pack belt.

IMHO, you will find alot of necessities aren't
really. A couple trail trips will teach you that.
