WORKERS KILL THOUSANDS IN NEW ENGLAND ECO-DISASTER!
Williamstown, MA 5/9/98
Authorities are still trying to assess the damage after trail crews
building a new side trail to the Appalachian Trail caused the death of
thousands of blackflies and noseums. "We just don't have any firm answers
on this", said the head of the state's environmental office when questioned
as to the numbers of victims. "There are bodies littering the trail
corridor, some of them are still stuck to the killers, it will take weeks
to fully assess the damage", he went on to say.
According to specialists on the scene, the flies were killed in
many different ways, some it seems were crushed when trail workers chased
them into body orifices, others were snatched out of the air in mid flight.
Many, it seems, succumbed while attempting to land on sweat soaked skin.
It is even reported that some workers may have actually ingested some
insects.
Charges against the trail workers are pending, "We did it for the
hikers", one was heard to say as they were led to waiting vans for
processing
Ecologists are unwilling to comment whether this disaster will have
a lasting impact on the area, although an unnamed source suggested that
early thru hikers might encounter less insects in the area.

It was a wonderful day,

Cosmo
