Because the wall of the body is about 1mm and the threaded end is thinner yet I beleive you would comprimise the strength of the body and could possible cause the end to weaken and break off entirely. The lightening holes are a good idea if this doesn't allow moisture to reach the contacts and cause them to corrode and fail over a period of time. You have actually defeated the purpose behind the Maglight and that is to provide a light weight, weatherproof and bombproof source of light. If you can avoid the moisture problem you'll be ok.
