Perhaps this is an alternative - cut down the body of the AA Mag lite,
re-tap the threads into the base to allow you to use the original end, and
compare how this works (time to burn out) compared to a AAA model of the
single battery type. This may result in a longer burn time due to the larger
battery. Keeping in mind the weight, proportionately, is it worth it? Also,
AA batteries seem to be easier to find, and work in lots of other electronic
devices, so this may figure into the equation as to whether this mod is
worth the time/expense...
