This past weekend, I encountered the same need. Got some water from a
tiny hillside stream, plunked an iodine tablet into it, shook it after 10 minutes,
and
noticed that there were other thingies floating around in there. In that case, I
held onto it, waiting for either (1) thirst overtaking the gross-out factor and
inspiring me to drink it anyway, or (2) another stream that ran a little clearer.
Fortunately, (2) won out.
Back to the question itself, though: I was thinking that it might work if I
strain the water through a fake chamois cloth that I take as a general
purpose washrag. A gauze dressing might work nicely, too.
