[at-l] BaxterStatePark/Katahdin Update

Wingfoot, please post this on AT98, please.
As they say, call ahead.... I just got off the phone, and instead of having
opened on schedule April 1st to 'day hiking', the Park is still closed!!
Here's the gist of the conversation:
You can park at Touge Pone gate and walk in for a few miles, I'm told. There
is, quoting here " An awful lot of snow " on the Mountain. They don't have a
Ranger up there yet. Conditions at lower elevations are "very dry" and they're
hoping for rain soon.
They are working hard on the roads ( none are paved, conditions range from
washboard to brook ) and are doing their best to open on time by the mid-May
start of the overnight camping season.
Last year the first Class 1 day for hiking Katahdin was the first week of
July.
I'm still heading up to Millinocket and Greenville this weekend, and will
have more to tell the Southbounders soon.
Baxter State Park's phone number is 207 723 5140, nice folks, doing a hard
job well.
   HappyTrails, TraderJohn
ps. the BSP regulation is " ...cellular telephones may not be operated
within the park."
