Blazes are not standardized as to the distance between them.  If the trail
is so plain that you cannot miss it, frequent blazes are not necessary but
there should be more blazes in areas that are confusing.  This is the theory
but remember that trails are maintained by Volunteers and not all blazing is 
perfect. Contact your local trail club to find out about joining the 
maintenance crews.
Following brown blazes (brown paint over white blazes from a relocation) can 
be dangerous.  Sometimes the trail is relocated because it is impassable from
a rock slide or something and other times it is because of impact.  In either 
case you should keep to the current trail.
