[at-l] re: gear list

jim:

rhymin' worms comments were good, and i'll add these:

>Fleece Cap & balaclava
balaclava can be rolled up and used as a cap, don't need both

>Fleece Pants
>Long John's (wool)
>Supplex Pants(1 pr)
>Rain pants
cold climate: rainpants, long johns, and either fleece or supplex but not
both.
also, consider polypro/capilene/coolmax longjohns - lighter.
warm climate: supplex pant only (for wind, rain, mosquitos, town)

>Fleece Shirt
i think even early on you'll need some sort of t-shirt, coolmax preferably.
doesn't seem like you have enough upper body insulation (or does it come
already installed? :)

>Bowls (2)
>Cups (2)
one of each only

>Egg Carrier
if you really want eggs, carry some small cartons of egg beaters - they
will last a few days unopened, especially in early season.

>Spatula
>Utencils
unless it's that ultralight bamboo spatula that weighs >1/2oz, don't bother
with it. other than that, you'll only need a spoon (lexan is good) and a
small pocket knife

>Candle Lantern
>Emergency Light
>Princetontec Headlamp
take one, probably headlamp

>Wire Saw
you'll ditch this in suches!

>Water
like RW said, a single widemouth nalgene is very useful, or consider those
32oz gatorade bottles - cheap, light, wider than your average soda bottle
mouth.

>Maps and trail guide for the section
>Databook
>Thru-hiker's Handbook
take only the pages you'll need from the data book, handbook and trail
guide. all three is probably overkill. the trail is so well marked (yeah
you can get lost, but really, this is a hard trail to lose - you usually
get lost in brand new relocations and such that aren't in the guides) that
the trail guides really aren't needed. they are good for pointing out
springs and campsites. you might consider sitting down with the maps and
guides, and marking on the maps all the relevant features mentioned in the
guides, then you won't have to carry them.
