"Celebrating 50 Years of Thru-hiking"

an event sponsored by the Town of Hot Springs*,

organized by the Mayor's Special Events Committee

<underline>Friday, April 24th

</underline>

Noon - 6PM: Check In at the town's Visitor Center (the red

caboose across from the post office), where you will receive a=20

schedule of the weekend's events, a name tag with your year,=20

and you can register for the door prizes which will be offered=20

on Saturday.


8PM-11PM: Hiker's Campfire and Mountain Music at the Spa=20

Campground, with music provided by local groups from the Hot=20

Springs area; hikers are invited to bring an instrument and=20

join in.=A0


<underline>Saturday, April 25th

</underline>

8AM-3PM: Check in at the town's Visitor Center (the red=20

caboose across from the post office), where you will receive a=20

schedule of the weekend's events, a name tag with your year,=20

and you can register for the door prizes which will be offered=20

on Saturday.


8AM-10AM: Pancake Breakfast for thru-hikers (free) at the Hot=20

Springs Community Center, facing the railroad tracks;=20

sponsored by the Hot Springs Friendship Club.


10AM-11AM: Trailplace Family Reception for users of the=20

website and subscribers to the ATML, WATL, AT98, ATClubs, and=20

ATTeens mailing lists, at the Fellowship Hall of the=20

Presbyterian Church in the middle of town, Dan "Wingfoot"=20

Bruce will host, sponsored by the Center for Appalachian Trail=20

Studies (other internet groups invited to attend).


11AM-Noon: Book Signing, by Earl Shaffer, author of "Walking=20

with Spring", his highly acclaimed account of the first thru-

hike; at the Bluff Mountain Outfitters store in the middle of=20

town.


Noon: 50th Anniversary Parade; Earl Shaffer, Grand Marshall,=20

with the local high school band leading an assortment of=20

floats and vehicles to celebrate the 50th anniversary of thru-

hiking ... plus a motley contingent of 1998 (and alumni) thru-

hikers "doing their thing".


1PM-3PM: Entertainment and Speaker's Stage with live music,=20

recognition of special guests, and speakers (keynote speaker:=20

David Brill, author of "As Far As the Eye Can See"), drawings=20

for door prizes; located in area beside the post office in the=20

center of town. During the program, Earl Shaffer will be asked=20

to unveil a bronze plaque, in honor of the 50th anniversary of=20

thru-hiking, which will be on permanent display on the Trail=20

in the middle of town.


3PM-5PM: Hiker Olympics, plus raft races and duck race, at the=20

Spa Campground; sponsored by the Bluff Mountain Outfitters.


3PM-4PM: "Stickin' with It ... Making It to Maine", slides,=20

stories, and audience participation led by 2,000-Miler Beverly=20

Hugo ("Maine Rose" of '95), motivational speaker and one of=20

the thru-hikers featured in the Trailside series on public=20

television; in the Presbyterian Church auditorium.


4PM-5PM: "Wolves and Wilderness", a slide show and=20

presentation by Marcas Marx, a "Class of '98" thru-hiker doing=20

a hike to raise awareness about the red wolf reintroduction=20

project; in the auditorium of the Presbyterian Church.


5:30PM: Rubber Duck Race, on Spring Creek in the middle of=20

town.


6PM-7PM: Music by "Rusty Bucket", nationally recognized=20

traditional mountain music quartet, featuring banjo legend=20

George Buckner (of the famous "Buckner Family"), at the=20

Speaker's Stage next to the post office.


7PM-9PM: "THE FIRST THRU-HIKE" Earl Shaffer, the first thru-

hiker, narrates and shows the slides he took on his historic=20

1948 thru-hike, in the auditorium of the Presbyterian Church,=20

followed by Earl singing songs about the Trail and the=20

outdoors; a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for hikers today to=20

relive one of the most remarkable feats in hiking history ...=20

with the person who did it!


9PM-11PM: Hiker's Campfire and performance by the Dennebe Drum=20

Group of Warren Wilson College; informal hiker drum circles=20

following; at the Spa Campground.


Sunday, April 26th


9:30AM-Noon: Church Services, hikers invited to attend in=20

hiking attire.

	9:30AM - Presbyterian Service

	10:30AM - Catholic Service

	11:00AM - Baptist Service


12:30PM: Church Dinner (for thru-hikers only) at the Baptist=20

and Presbyterian Churches; brunch at Catholic Church.


2PM-3PM: Closing Ceremonies with The Blessing of the Trail, an=20

ecumenical service and the first "Blessing of the Trail"=20

ceremony; in the chapel and on the lawn of the Jesuit=20

Facility. All people of all faiths (or no faiths) are invited=20

to join in this non-sectarian service of thanksgiving for the=20

wonders to be seen and the joys to be experienced along the=20

Appalachian Trail.=A0

Trail Visions ... continuously running award-winning videos,=20

slides, and films of the Appalachian Trail including, Trail=20

Magic by Carol "Lagunflic" Moore, "Five Million Steps" by=20

Lynne Wheldon, "Amazing Grace, the Story of Bill Irwin", and=20

others; at the Presbyterian Church.


Additional music events, speakers, and special guests to be=20

announced.
