Subject: [PATC] We still need lots of help!

At the beginning of February, a devastating ice storm hit Shenandoah
National Park, Virginia. Ice collected one to two inches on trees, and
many branches, tree-tops, and trees came down on the Appalachian Trail and
side trails above 2000' feet. As a result of the damage, the Skyline Drive
has been closed for over two months while park crews repair damage and
clear the road. Meanwhile, the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club is in the
process of conducting a major clean-up and clearing effort in cooperation
with the National Park Service.

If you visit SNP and hike the trails, your help in the clean-up effort is
needed. You can find information about the storm, including pictures of
the conditions during the icing and resulting damage, on PATC's website at
the following URL:

Clean-up will continue for quite some time. The first organized effort
occurred on Saturday, March 7th, where 18 miles of of the Appalachian Trail
were cleared. Typically, a 6-person crew can only make about 2 miles of
progress over a 6-hour work day. That still leaves quite a bit more to go,
with spring hiking season just around the corner. Will Shenandoah National
Park be hikable this spring? That may depend directly on you, and your
willingness to help. If you can spare a Saturday, please join us in this
major cleanup effort.

Next clean-up date - THIS SATURDAY. Visit the storm damage page for more
details.

Andy
