the subject of songs reminds me of the first (and last) time I took my
brother backpacking about a hundred years ago, (1966). As we were
heading south on the AT from Bear Mtn. he was complaining of the distance.
To take his mind off it, I told him to sing a song. Moments later I heard
the refrain from "500 Miles" (Woody Guthry I think). He changed his tune after
a smack from my walking stick.
