I feel pretty pathetic when I am reduced to answering laundry questions, but
here goes.  Plain old vinegar (either yellow or white) works for taking the
smell out of the underarm area of shirts.  You might try soaking the shorts in
vinegar in the sink for a few minutes, then running them through the washer.  

Stay away from those gourmet vinegars--I don't think garlic or raspberry will
improve the shorts.
