They're really the trail's way of claiming the world. And if Gary Snyder is
right (quoted else-when), we should be walking the other places, not there.
A blazed trail is a way for hoomans widout compasses to wander around in
the woods widout gettin lawst.
What if there was a trail without blazes? Would it be a trail?
