ATML--A place to discuss AT issues with friends in friendship!

The first northbound thru-hiker of 1998 has reached
Hot Springs. His name is Jean-Phileppe and he left
Springer in late January. I asked him about Trail
conditions, and his report is very good. Although he
had waist deep snow in parts of the Smokies (much of
that should soon be melting), he reported that the
AT is passable and not too bad for the first 250 or
so miles. He had some difficulty with the section
from Max Patch to Hot Springs (lots of big blowdowns),
but the clubs are working on that now, so the major
obstacles should be cleared for those of you who are
starting in the days to come.--WF
