[at-l] Seriously, folks...

I grew up in Maine, and started hiking in the Whites and Baxter in the 60s.
My first knowledge of the AT came one summer in New Hampshire when my Dad
explained to me what those 'beatniks' in the next campsite were up to. And I
can remember clearly the first time the information on the sign on Baxter Peak
sunk in...
I remember the actual head rush when I realized the trail beneath my feet
rolled south over the Appalachians for over two thousand miles... and
wondering if there was someone else, standing on a mountain in Georgia at that
very moment looking north, as I stood on Katahdin, looking south.
The undertaking this year's hikers are about to begin has deep roots. The
heritage of the trail is a wonderful history. And, believe it or not, every
single bit of support over the years has kept the Trail alive. It will live as
long as you hike it, as long as you maintain it, and as long as you enthuse
others about it. It'll take more than some rope and a can or two of beans to
injure it. Hike on, grasshoppers, hike on....
