Keep your eyes open for your local REI's "garage sale"!
I went to my local REI's garage sale last weekend. This is a
members-only event during which they sell returned and damaged goods for
way low prices. It was a zoo, but I managed to pick up a pair of
windstopper polarfleece pants for $15 (regular price, still on the tag =
$95), an ultralight full-length thermarest for $25, and a pair of winter
cycling gloves for $12. The pants and gloves had minor stitching
problems, which I fixed in about 10 minutes. The Thermarest had no
problem (that I can identify; I slept on it in the house overnight).
They also had an OR Advanced Bivy for $65 (already have one, or I'd have
snapped that up), plus boots, packs, skis, boards, ... pretty much
everything they sell. It was well worth the effort to attend. BTW, I
arrived 20 minutes before the opening and there were already about 30
people in line waiting for the door to open.
