A weary wrist is the least of your worries. I never carried anything above
a 50. Here's the formula: the larger the TC you carry, the more often
you'll end up with cash in your pocket. When I got $500, typically I'd get
300 in 50s, and 200 in 20s. I'd use the 50s for motels, gear, groceries,
etc., and the 20s for snacks, beer, pizza, etc. If I was doing it over
again, I'd carry more 20s and  maildrop more often--they were just more
convenient and kept me from going over budget on impulse.

BTW, one thing I did that did NOT work was having my wife send money orders
to me, which I'd convert into TCs. (We didn't buy a whole bunch of TCs
pre-hike, chosing to let the cash stay in an account and draw interest.)
Once I got out of the south, no one would accept the money orders unless I
had an account with the bank I was trying to cash it in. Right.
